Well, we know Felucca has a *ahem* CHEST, right? Well, why would she? She isn't very mammal like, she would be more of a reptile, cold-blooded, ya know? Well, the breasts are needed for MAMMAL babies to be fed milk from, reptiles and such lay eggs, and do not need them.

It strikes me as odd.

Debatable?

Who's to say her species don't share some mammalian aspects? After all, she's not a reptile, she's an alien with some reptilian features.

Definitely debatable.

I for one definitely do not want to look too deeply into how certain characters reproduce, and what purpose certain portions of their anatomy serve.

For example, Tengu's race has only one gender. So do they reproduce by spores, or divide like bacteria or something? It's possible they have both sets of...equipment, but I doubt they'd take any kind of form we'd recognize.

...and that's why I don't want to think about it, because that image I can just do without.

Plus the divine and omnipotent Lady has pretty much already stated that reproduction on Earthsong isn't going to be an issue. Which is good, though it is somewhat depressing that Zae and K'thonna won't be able to live happily ever after and have little green goat babies. But their species probably aren't interfertile anyway.

It might be worth assuming that some form of basic format for sentient life is passed on between planets when they learn to create their children - not only do all the females seen have breasts, but with a few exceptions (the centaur, who may or may not appear in the redux) all of the species seen so far are of the same basic humanoid layout with minor modifications. We know that there is a basic requirement for life-supporting planets to be M-class or thereabouts in ES-verse, but this does not preclude weird creatures - so maybe the species in ES verse HAVE to be designed around the basic humanoid format.

Technically, a centaur is a humanoid with some modification. It's just a combination of two existing creatures, so...

I think most children bare some resemblence to their parent planet, but this would have to be a very loose relationship. Nanashi's not green, after all.

I don't see why sentient life would HAVE to be humanoid. There seems to be a simpler solution. Not only are nearly all the aliens humanoid, so are the planets who created them. With the exception of the occasional chinese dragon dude, every manifest has at least a torso. I imagine that it's a case of creating life in their own image, unless they REALLY like another shape (the conceptual wolf from WAY back)

Edit: Pretty much what Cypher just said >_> (must have skipped over that post)

But why do the planets have humanoid form anyway?

The scenario i proposed would be a simple, in-universe law, in the same way as 'life is only possible on m-class planets' is.

Because the Siderea thought it looked fashionable?

We know that all the species' stem from a single source, the stars, and if everything below the level of the stars has the same basic shape...Just easier to think that things are derivitive, rather than trying to iron out some mysterious natural law.

I agree with Virturealm, all planets are 'siblings' and look relatively similar, and all of their children are humanoid, which is similar to their planet's manifested form.

Maybe the Lady thought it would be easier for us to imagin how the planets might move if they all resemble species we are familiar with (ignore Star Wars and other sci-fi movies)

All planets aren't humanoid either. In Earthsong's flashback, you can clearly see an orange one that's shaped like an oriental dragon. So I guess they just picked humanoid forms because the Alpha planets have them. Vol. 1 mentions that Earthsong modeled her manifest after Gaia, so they do get to pick their own look.

But even a dragon had a head on top of a neck, a spinal column, four limps + tail... it isn't enormously different, if you look at the basic structure.

True. Maybe the Lady didn't want giant bugs walking around?
