Not the one I was thinking of, but it makes some of the same points, and a few new ones.

Note on Salamanders: No one can figure out why I never caught salamanders as a kid--none of my siblings did, either, incidentally. NC is apparently famous for having lots of salamanders, too, because we have such an incredibly varied landscape. There are over 30 native species. The only thing I can think of is that most of those species live in the mountains or down on the coast, and only two or three make their home in the middle-ish area.

No, but that's a pretty wonderful explanation. ^__^

Went to bed after class and woke up to a petty torrential downpour. Right on time. The pollen was becoming unbearable and we were all getting tired of everything being tinted yellow.

Rain here too! It's been raining off and on for the last three days. And it's due to rain for several more! ^_^

So I won my school's poetry award.

I . . . excuse me I'm going to go run about my backyard and do cartwheels of joy.

'Twas a portfolio. I could pick a small one out though. ^^

And at that, I discover that, even with this last week, I still have esteem problems with my work. ><

Nononononono. I was supposed to be making progress on this.

Sigh.

I'll pick something out, anyways. It will have to be something small, since I know that I'm supposed to take a stab at publishing next semester. But I'll put something up. ^__^

Nu, EVERYONE has esteem issues with their work. Even, perhaps especially, the successful ones. I think it comes with the territory.

Yeah, it's actually a known thing in management that people go through being conscious of flaws in what they do as they get better. ^^;

Got confirmation that I'll be starting up the work-related thing mentioned earlier on Monday ^___^ Kinda slightly nervous but it'll be great to be paid for my work for a change.

So my therapist gave the kick in the rear I apparently needed to start transcribing my data again (it's been almost two months since I did anything to it) and today I finally got to the one kid who gave a hilarious rendition of the story he was supposed to tell.

The way this works: The child is told a story, with pictures. The child is then handed the pictures, and asked to tell the story back. In essence, we are comparing how closely the child's story resembles the original (but a lot more complicated than that).

More-or-less the original story: One day there was a mother bird with her three babies. The babies were hungry, so the mother bird flew off to find food for them. Meanwhile, a mean cat came and saw the baby birds. He wanted to eat one, so he climbed a tree to get to the birds. Then a dog came and saw the bird, so he bit the cat's tail and chased him away. Then everyone was happy because they were saved.

The child's version of the story:

LEGEND:
(.) = pause
(..) = long pause
[//] = retracing (changed his mind in the middle of talking)
+/. = interrupted

%sit: child flipping pages.
*CHI: xxx but where's the letters?
*INT: there's no letters.
*INT: you tell the story from the pictures.
*CHI: um (..) the baby birds were hungry so the other bird got food for them.
*INT: say it really loud 'cause Miffy doesn't +/.
*CHI: then a very nice cat came (.) to make [//] a very nice cat came and and climbed up and and ate all the birds.
*CHI: the end yay!
*INT: come T___ tell the story the way +/.
*CHI: I'll make it a little happier.
*INT: okay you can make it happier.
*INT: can you tell Miffy the way I told him the story?
*CHI: (.) no.
*INT: so tell it your way.
*INT: the birds (.) [//] the cat was climbing up to see the birds.
*INT: go ahead.
*CHI: no the cat was jumping to the birds and ate the birds.
*CHI: and then a dog came.
*CHI: and then the cat jumped on the dog and killed the dog.
*INT: the end.
*CHI: I made it happier.
*INT: okay.
*CHI: happy for me!

*facepalm* I can't not laugh when I think about this. Plus, the kid was really emphatic about it. "And then a very nice cat came..." Hee hee hee.
