PNG is... well, okay, not streamlined. However, JPEG/JPG uses a compression technology that actually looks at all of the pixels around each pixel, and brings a pixel's color closer to it's neighbors. You can understand how this results in a massive loss of quality rather quickly. PNG and GIF don't do this. _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

Haha. And on the almost-two-year anniversary of the last post in this thread, I resurrect it! Haha!
Anyway, I was curious about something. Does the person's avatar affect the way you imagine that person to look? Like, do people think I'm a tiny, round, squinty-eyed grandmother of indeterminate origin, or some derivative thereof? Do people think I'm self-centered for asking this question? _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

I find that I don't imagine you guys with faces, more as if I were seeing you from a distance. Hair colour, body type, height, that kind of thing. To that end I imagine you as quite tall and slender, with long wavy brown hair, so not much like your avatar! _________________ He who does not eat cheese will go mad. ~ French proverb.

I tend to feel people more as impressions of warmth or cold and voices when I read them online. If I know what someone looks like then that's what comes to mind when I consciously try to think of what they look like, but other than that I don't think it would really occur to me.
...
Thinking about people I know on other forums, I find I can't bring an image of them to mind other than their avatar - but I don't think that's what they look like. It's more like I've got a picture of one of their posts in my mind than anything. _________________ Never forget,

Not self-centered at all! ^^
I actually agree with Nem.
You each have a specific "voice" (more of a tone, really), and an impression of a personality.
I don't try to think of what you all might look like. That would be silly, because I don't know what you look like.
That being said, if my brain needs a visual marker, I will think of your avatars. That mostly happens when I'm trying to recall something specific someone's said, or trying to tell a non-forum person about how wonderful you all are. ^^
In that case, it's pretty similar to the way I use landmarks to find my way around (or remember where I parked my car . . . >>; ).
So it's more like a tab on a file--I don't think anyone actually looks like their avatar. Unless it's a picture of them (I know Usa does that sometimes). _________________ Keeper of Gaia and all the books on Earthsong
