Whee! Congratulations Tam!
EDIT: Since I don't want to be a double-poster.
Today I am terrifically excited! Tomorrow my friend and I embark on a ten day journey around Europe. We're getting an 18 hour train to Oslo, flying to Berlin and spending a couple of days there, 7 hour train to Konstanz, staying for four days, 12 hour train to the south of France, staying there for four days and then getting another 12 hour train back to Blighty.
And then I'm going to the Olympics.

Wow! Have fun! What I have to look forward to this summer is paper-writing. Lots and lots of paper-writing.
Oh yes! I was accepted to the MA in Linguistics! I'm switching my focus, and adding a thesis. Any advice, I'd love to hear it. ^_^ _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^

today walking around in flat shoes because going to pick up car from mechanics. V-odd. Lack of squishyness.
Also sunlight is quite bright. MotorBikes loook fun. Thoughts wanser aimlessly. Woman just looked back over her shoulder rather sharply - wonder whar her history is; nervy ,nervy.

Have fun Alli!
I got my cast off today! Yay!
It's going to be about a month, probably longer before I can go horse riding again and right now my wrist is quite stiff but the doctor said I just need to use it normally and not lift anything too heavy until I've built up strength again.
And even though I have two hands again I keep doing things one handed out of habit. _________________ Britland as dubbed by AsA

There's a commercial on the television here in the 'States that is basically a pair of sunglasses. They're polarized, and they're being marketed as some kind of vision-enhancing thing.
And yes, motorbikes look awesome. I want to get one, but no one approves of my desire to ride one.. >_>

Yes, polarization is fun.
I want a motorbike, or at least a scooter. I have a phobia of driving four-wheeled vehicles that doesn't exist for two-wheeled vehicles, but the exponentially greater risk factor is sort of a large hurdle to overcome.

That sounds like fun, Alli!

It'd be nice if statistics were easier to get for people in certain risk groups. Most people are awful drivers, so it's not surprising they get into a lot of accidents. At least for cars - if you don't have a crash in your first six months of driving, then the odds are fairly heavily in favour of you not having one in your lifetime.
Just slamming motorcycle statistics into duck duck go gives a page that claims that
- 59% of the bikers killed in 2008 were not wearing helmets.
- Of the motorcycle operators killed in 2008, 30% had a BAC of .08 or higher.
- 35% of all bikers involved in fatal crashes in 2008 were speeding.
- One out of four motorcycle riders in fatal crashes in 2008 were riding their vehicles with an invalid license.
Ya know? Those people are idiots. It's hard to get clear pictures of your actual risk when there are people like that floating around - especially considering they're just the unlucky idiots.
I'm sure people not paying attention to motorcycles hurts a lot, but there are advanced driver courses out there that seem to do a pretty good job. At least the ones endorsed by the police and the like.
Guess what I'm trying to say is, if you pay attention, I don't think it's that risky. I know of motorcyclists who've lived long enough to die of cancer or heart failure instead

You run yourself so close to the bone that you pass out. Even I don't think you should be driving anything that places such a high premium on continual awareness. ^^;
At least not until you're less scragged. (Heh, didn't expect the spell-checker to have that one.) But you know - if you are all sharp and aware and stuff - it doesn't seem like you're a bad driver so, in principle, I don't see why you shouldn't ever.
I gather you can do a lot with various coatings for glasses, other than just polarising the light, that improves contrast and the like. Though I don't know very much about optics.

Today was unaccountably sleepy, so slept until around three in the afternoon. >_>
Today did a fair bit of reading.
Today I used you know twice in a piece of text - this makes me seem more like a teenager - >_> - it would be nice if simply adopting a different style of speaking made you younger. =p _________________ Never forget,

I had a really good laugh over this, thank you. I'm not even remotely going to argue the point - you're right. It just amused me to hear it so plainly said!
Motorcycle statistics tend to include a lot of the fatalities, and most of those from what I can tell are people who are kind of doing it wrong. I admit that if you get into a collision on a motorcycle you're kind of boned, but I haven't been in many collisions in a car, either. It can be argued that you're harder to see on a motorcycle, but from what I've observed it's just safer to assume the other drivers are all blind morons anyway. That's how I've avoided collisions in the fist place.. >_>
Today a friend I've recently met pegged me perfectly. "You may try very hard to be like Tony Stark, but you are in fact almost exactly like Steve Rogers." Not only did that make some nerdy part of me squee with glee, but she's not wrong, either. _________________ . Dubbed "Usagi" by AsA .

Heheh, I think she's right too.
Motorcycles: The fatalities may be from stupid things, but I know a woman who has a motorcycle license. She was sideswiped by a car and sent careening across the road... spent several months in bed recovering from pulled muscles and ligaments all over her body. My aunt let me ride her Vespa up and down the block once. Tipped over near the end because I lost confidence and was bruised all up and down one side. The Vespa suffered scratched paint and a broken mirror.
Another thing to think about is that a bump that would mean nothing to the driver of a car can be disastrous or fatal to a motorcyclist. The OTHER stupid people on the road will still be doing the stupid things they do... the rider of a motorcycle is just more vulnerable to their stupidity.
My dad made a good point which I'm not sure if it's law or not: That one should have a full driver's license (Class A in the US, I think) and experience in a car before getting a motorcycle license. That way you'll at least know what the other cars should be and will be doing, and have a larger awareness of space. Makes a lot sense to me.
Last day of university classes today, last day of teaching was yesterday. Gave a presentation, listened to others give presentations. Last performance of the play is this evening!!! _________________ Self-styled Forum Grandmother, because I hand out nicknames and hugs whether you want them or not. ^_^
